Motorist pinned to death by pick-up


Too much alcohol allegedly led a pick-up driver to lose control of his vehicle and crashed head-on into a jeep and a motorcycle resulting to the death of a motorist and injuring of two others in Barangay Victoria, this city, on Friday night.

Killed on the spot was Benhar Sahazar y Bahin, 28, driver of the Honda XRM motorcycle bearing plate number 3020-SC and a resident of Sitio Aplaya, Barangay Manicahan.

The injured were identified as Nada Totoh y Abdula, 25, back-rider of the motorcycle, residing in Sitio Aplaya, Manicahan, and Job Angelo y Santos, 34, married, driver of the owner type jeep with plate number JAV-287, and a resident of Barangay Bolong.

Police Station 3 commander, Chief Inspector Chester Natividad told Zamboanga Today that the driver of the Navarra Frontier pick-up bearing plate number KDY-173 identified as Oscar Apolinario y Barredo, 59, a retired policeman and a resident of Barangay Cabaluay, this city, was allegedly under the influence of liquor while driving home from Barangay Sangali, this city.

Natividad said that Apolinario allegedly encroached the opposite lane and crashed into the owner type jeep and motorcycle travellingthe opposite direction.

Police said that the owner type jeep landed on its right-side while Sahazar and his motorcycle were pinned against the metal railing of the road causing his instantaneous death.

The injured victims were brought to Zamboanga City Medical Center.

The cadaver of the motorist was claimed by his family.

The pick-up driver was brought to the police station for further investigation and detention while his vehicle was impounded at the police station.

The police confirmed that the driver was traveling in high speed and allegedly lost control of his steering wheel. They are still seeking medical intervention to establish the suspect’s level of intoxication. (Eugene A. Lasprilla)
