Three Zamboangueño construction workers were able to escape  a day after they were threatened with decapitation by their Abu Sayyaf captors in Sulu province.

Task Force Sulu Commander Brig Gen Cirilito Sobejana said that Joel Adanza, Felimon Guerrero and Jayson Vailoces, escaped and were recovered yesterday morning in barangay Kagay, Talipao, Sulu.

Sobejana said that it is still uncertain if another captive, Edmundo “Muymuy” Ramos, was also able to escape from the Abu SAyyaf.

“They were on the run during the military pressure.  We are still verifying if he was able to escape,” Sobejana said.

Sobejana said that one of the victims sustained injuries in the body during the exchange of gunfire between government forces and the Abu Sayyaf.

The three underwent custodial debriefing at the JTF headquarters in Sulu and airlifted to Zamboanga city to meet their families.

Last Thursday, the Abu Sayyaf threatened to behead all the victims if ransom amounting to P1.5-million will not be paid.

Reports disclosed that a negotiator later delivered money to the bandits but was nearly killed when the latter found out that part of the bundle of bills was fake.

That same afternoon, the hostages took advantage of the situation when the bandits were praying and escaped.

They ran until they reached barangay Kagay, Talipao, Sulu and were recovered by civilians led by barangay captain Julsi Hadil.  (Nonong Santiago)
