Zambo Gov’t honors fallen, living heroes of 2013 siege

The City Government will spearhead activities today, September 9, to honor the fallen and living heroes of the 2013 siege at 4:30am at the City Hall grounds.

The activities will kick off with a wreath laying rite at the memorial marker in Rizal Street to be spearheaded by Mayor Beng  Climaco and followed by a commemorative program where modern day heroes will also be recognized.

A Concert of Valor to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in defense of the city and to the men and women in uniform who continue to defend the sovereignty of Zamboanga.

The Zamboanga siege, that lasted for 21 days was perpetrated by members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) loyal to the founding chair Nur Misuari, claimed 38 lives – 20 soldiers, 5 policemen and 13 civilians.

The siege displaced thousands of families who were initially housed in evacuation centers and later to transitory sites. As of August 30, 2017, the National Housing Authority (NHA) reported that 5,480 out of the total 6,343 housing units, have already been completed and 829 are ongoing construction.  Awarded to beneficiaries 4,752 units and ready for awarding is 728 units.

The other day, the National Housing Authority (NHA) and the City Government turned over 433 houses on stilts in Vale Vista Phase III in Kasanyangan in ceremonies held at the City Coliseum in Tetuan, as part of the activities commemorating the September 9, 2013 siege. The 433 housing units were the second and last batch of houses turned over to beneficiaries in Vale Vista III which has a total 866 housing slots.

Mayor Climaco has expressed confidence that the NHA can fully complete the housing packages including the additional houses requested by the city government, soon. (Sheila Covarrubias/PR)
