Passenger jeep rams tree, 8 hurt

Eight out of 20 passengers of a public utility jeepney(PUJ) were injured when the vehicle plunged into an acacia tree in Barangay Lunzuran, this city, yesterday morning.

Police Station 5 Commander, Superintendent Mark Azur said that the PUJ bearing plate number DVL-119, driven by Joel ToribioLumacang, 26, married, of Phase 1, Lunzuran,with 20 passengers onboard was heading towards the city proper at 7:00in the morning.

Police said the vehicle was navigating a descending portion of the road when the driver felt that the brakes were not working.This prompted him to swerve the steering wheel to the Acacia tree to avoid hitting bystanders in the area.

Eight passengers who sustained injuries were brought to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Azur identified the injured as JericTiamzon y Veloso, 23, married; Mary Rose Carpio y Ulan, 17, single; Jonathan Agullana y Punzalan, 29, married; Raffy Joy Curan y Cabayacruz, 18, single; MaryloueBanua y Alaban, 29, single; MarietoPaete y Doyola, 58, married; Ron Victor Tagavilla y Eadina, 27, married and Jon Eric Saldua y Mabida, 25, single, all residents of the same place.

The driver was conducted to the police station while the case is still pending deeper investigation.

A case of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple physical injuries is being readied against the driver in court. (Eugene A. Lasprilla)
