240 fishers register for Regatta on Oct. 8

For the first time in recent history of Regatta, a race of vintas with colorful sails, will have 240 participants mostly fishers from the different barangays of the city to highlight the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival next month.

Christian Olasiman, who heads the Special Events Team of the City Mayor’s Office, announced at Monday’s press briefing that this year’s Regatta scheduled on Oct. 8 at R.T. Lim Boulevard will have a total to 240 participants, surpassing the record of previous years.

This time, he said the Regatta competitors doe only come from coastal barangays but also from among the internally displaced persons (IDPs) at Masepla transitory sites, Sta. Cruz Island, Campo Islam, Campo Muslim, Taluksangay, Rio Hondo, Mariki and Sta. Catalina, among others.

The Regatta is one of the highlights of the annual Zamboanga Hermosa Festival in honor of the city’s patron saint, the Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar, whose feast is celebrated by Christian Zamboangueños here and abroad every Oct. 12 of each year.

It is one of the annual festivities that draws huge number of spectators from all walks of life converging on the entire stretch of Cawa-Cawa Boulevard.

Prizes at stake have also increased to P15,000 for the first place, P12,000 for second, P10,000 for third, P7,000 for fourth and P5,000 for the fifth placer. Non-winners will receive P1,000 each.

Also first time for the competition is the choice for Best Vinta to receive P3,000. (City Hall/PR)
