An elderly man was axed to death by his stepson at Sitio Mala, Barangay Sangali, Zamboanga City on Monday.

Police Station 3 commander Chief Insp. Chester Natividad identified the  victim as Sulficio Noyat y Alfonso, 70, married, of the said barangay.

Natividad told Zamboanga Today that the victim suffered  fatal wounds on his head causing his instantaneous death.

Police identified the suspect as Gilbert Sortes y Madera, of legal age, stepson of the victim and a resident of the same barangay.

A follow-up investigation was conducted by the responding policemen led by Sr. Insp. Benzar Bairulla that resulted to the arrest of the suspect.

The body of the victim was brought to La Merced Memorial Homes for the post mortem examination.

Based on the initial police investigation conducted by PO3 Jova Agustin, Investigator-On-Case, it appeared that the victim and the suspect had a misunderstanding while they were drinking coconut wine (tuba)

Allegedly, it was the victim who first tried to stab the suspect but missed prompting the latter to grab an ax and hit the former right on the head.

Sortez is now detained at the police station pending the filing of appropriate case against him in court. (Eugene A. Lasprilla)
