Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday reiterated the City’s firm stand for non-inclusion in the proposed Bangsamoro homeland under the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) which is pending in Congress.

The mayor said Zamboanga City –to include all of its 98 barangays and municipal waters – must not and must never be part of the proposed BBL which establishes a new autonomous government with more powers to replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

“We support President Duterte’s aspirations for peace, for Filipinos to be one under one Republic of the Philippines but Zamboanga City should not be included in the BBL,” Mayor Climaco declared in an interview over TV11 Wednesday morning.

The Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC), on two occasions approved a resolution sponsored by governors of Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay declaring that there are no MILF territories or communities in any part of Zamboanga Peninsula including the 98 barangays of Zamboanga City, Climaco who is the RPOC head said.

The resolution, she said, would be a critical document in case questions about jurisdiction and percentage of people who wants inclusion in the proposed BBL would be tackled in Congress.

The proposed law, which is backed by President Duterte, remains pending in Congress.

In a press conference at Centro Latino last Saturday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque downplayed the possibility of including Zamboanga City in the proposed BBL. (Sheila Covarrubias)
