Mayor Beng Climaco has appealed to the contractors through the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to fast track the ongoing rehabilitation of the Mayor Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex in Baliwasan, and have it completed by September this year.

Climaco made a surprise inspection of the grandstand rehabilitation projects yesterday morning and she appeared not satisfied with the slow pace of the implementation.

She was particularly concerned about the unpredictable weather conditions that have caused unnecessary delays to the already delayed completion of the project.

To recall, the DPWH had early on announced that the grandstand rehabilitation would be completed October 2017 but it failed due to delayed arrival of the imported rubberized materials from Germany. Then the target was moved to December last year, but just the same it failed.

In her ocular visit to the grandstand yesterday, the chief executive dared the contractors through the DPWH to fast tract and finish the rehabilitation works on or before September this year, in time for the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival in October.

The rehabilitation of the grandstand is funded by the national government at P187 million with DPWH as the implementing agency.

The 26-year-old sports complex had incurred heavy damage after it was transformed into the biggest evacuation center for more the 120,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) following the siege in 2013.

It was only two years later that the IDPs were gradually moved out of the grandstand and transferred to the different transitory sites.
