Brgy. Chair surrenders firearms of tanods

A barangay chairman on Thursday morning, voluntarily surrendered and turned over four garand rifles and several rounds of ammunition to the Task Force Zamboanga at the Barangay Hall of Arena Blanco, Zamboanga City.

Lt. Col. Rolando Gomez, Commanding Officer of the 11th Infantry Battalion, disclosed that Arena Blanco barangay chairman Mujib Mohammad Abdulhusin, turned over three caliber 30 M1 garand rifles and one Winchester rifle including five clips, and 40 rounds of ammunitions to 1Lt. Romeo Gumiran. Commanding Officer of the Alpha Company of the Philippine Army, which was witnessed by the barangay officials.

According to Gomez, he earlier met with the barangay leaders during a courtesy call where he informed Abdulhusin about the pronouncements of DILG Secretary Eduardo Año, on the provision of R.A. 10591, also known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunitions Act of 2012.

The law emphasizes that barangay tanods are not authorized to carry firearms.

As an offshoot of the pronouncements, Abdulhusin immediately surrendered the firearms to the military in accordance of the DILG guidelines disallowing barangay tanods to bear firearms.

Gomez said, the confiscated firearms have no official record with the AFP, hence, they are considered loose firearms.

He said the rifles are now in the custody of his office for further dispositive action. (Elinor Fernandez)
