Zamboanga moves to 7th place in Batang Pinoy Mindanao

Zamboanga City athletes have moved further down to 7th place in the fourth day of hostilities in the ongoing Batang Pinoy Mindanao leg competition being held in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.

Zamboanga City Sports czar Dr. Cecile Atilano disclosed at least 76 local government units from all over Mindanao are fighting for supremacy in the one week sports competion which started March 6 until Monday March 12.

Last year Zamboanga City placed fourth overall in the Batang Pinoy National Games that was held in Tagum, Davao del Norte.

Atilano said the Batang Pinoy National Games will be held in Baguio City this coming September.

Zamboangueño athletes who are now excelling in the competition are John Ross de Sosa who won two gold in archery and Albert Jose Villaces who bagged another gold in the 100 meter dash. He was described by Atilano as the fastest runner from Vitali who handily won over his rivals in the said sports competition.

In Chess, Angel Salem clinched the bronze, Ymgel Mikaela Jimena got another gold in archery.

While in Pengkat Silat, players Gian Ralph Ungkayam, Alexandra Bernardo, Hana Leanio, Raven Carandang  got gold each. Their teammate Rica Mae Boholst garnered two gold.

In Karate-do, these are the following players who contributed gold each, Julian Pueblo, KC Lyn Bello, Abdurasid Antao, Vanessa Rojas while Nurhan Hakimin added a bronze medal.

In swimming, Austin John Humpak got gold in the 100 meter butterfly.

In athletics, Rea Claire Cristobal won the long jump.

In arnis individual solo, Yuan Sanchez won gold and Angel Mikaela won the other gold in the single fita.

According to Atilano, the Zamboanga delegation has a total of 170 athletes including coaches.

Of the 19 different sports events, Zamboanga athletes are participating in only 15 events. (Elinor Fernandez)
