Silat athletes recognized for int’l feat

Mayor Beng Climaco Monday spearheaded the recognition of four Pencak Silat athletes who won in the recently concluded 9th UPSI Silat International Championship held in Perak, Malaysia from March 18-21.

Certificates of recognition were presented to Mutmainna Asmad, silver medalist in the Tanding Senior category; Tyrone Bernardo, silver medalist in the Tunggal Men category and Harold Raph Ungaya and Jerome Negapatan silver medalist in the Double Ganda category for their feats in Malaysia that brought honor and fame not only to Zamboanga City but the entire country. Also acknowledged were their coaches- Beverly Mahusay, April Joy Alarcon and Herold Padi.

Mayor Climaco acknowledged the young athletes, who all hail from barangay San Roque, and products of the city’s Summer Learn to Play a Sports Program, a free clinic on 26 sports events for children aged 15 and below.

She hoped the athletes all the best as they will be representing the country anew in the Junior World Pencak Silat Championship 2018 slated in Senggal, Thailand from April 23-29.

Councilor Joselito “Litlit” Marohon, former San Roque barangay chair witnessed the recognition of the athletes held at the City Hall press room and expressed pride in the children’s accomplishments. The former barangay official was instrumental in the training and eventual victory of the athletes being residents of San Roque.

City Sports Director Dr. Cecil Atilano facilitated the recognition of the athletes and invited those interested to take part in the Summer Learn to Play a Sports Program 2018 set from May 1-31 in different venues.

Registration for the free sports clinic is ongoing until April 31. (Sheila Covarrubias)
