The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has identified Barangay Rio Hondo and some island barangays as areas of concern in the forthcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections scheduled on May 14.

Comelec Officer Atty. Stephen Roy Cañete said that the Rio Hondo Elementary School still does not have electricity and the school has no walls and anybody can just go in and out of the school facility.

Cañete said Comelec has already brought this problem to the local police and Task Force Zamboanga so they can augment security in the school especially during the conduct of the counting.

Some teachers of the said school are also apprehensive whether to render election duty because of the said problem.

“Debe era ya tene signature campaign maga voters de Rio Hondo si quiere ba sila man transfer el polling center alla na Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology pero late ya cay serca ya el election,” Cañete said.

Cañete said they are still currently evaluating and assessing which of the island barangays are considered election hot spots.

He said the Police Regional Office 9 has assured them that additional policemen will augment the number of policemen tasked to secure the various polling centers in Zamboanga City.

He said candidates who are fighting among each other in a particular barangay is considered as areas of concern.

But as of press time, he said, that various barangays are being monitored by their office so that proper coordination with the police for security will be conducted. (Elinor Fernandez)
