CHED: 5 private colleges, universities impose tuition hike

At least five private colleges and universities in Zamboanga City have opted to increase its tuition fees this school year.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) identified the schools as Universidad de Zamboanga, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School, Pilar College and Nuevo Zamboanga College.

The commission said the schools will increase more than five percent of its tuition fees stressing the need to modernize its facilities, equipment and to also increase the salaries of its faculty and staff.

The CHED disclosed that the five schools in the city are among 17 private schools in Region 9 which have earlier announced the increase of their matriculation fees.

According to CHED, these schools have already submitted all the requirements needed for the approval of their request for the tuition hike.

The schools reasoned out the importance of the additional payment in tuition fees as there is a need to modernize their equipment and facilities for quality education of their students as well the needed increase of the salaries of their teachers and staff.

The CHED said it will monitor and check if these schools are complying with the CHED’s mandate and vowed to impose sanction against violators. (By Elinor Fernandez)
