Muslims prepare for culmination of Ramadan

Muslim communities of Zamboanga City are now preparing for the culmination of the 2018 Holy Month of Ramadan, a month of full devotion to fasting and prayers throughout the Islamic world.

Prior to the celebration of the Eidil-Fitri (Hariraya Puasa), the ritual moon-sighting will take place in the late afternoon/sunset of June 14, 2018/29 Ramadan 1439 A.H. according to Ustadz Wahid Amil, the spokesperson of the Darul Ifta and the Grand Mufti whose message was relayed to Prof. Ali T. Yacub, Al-Hj, president of the Golden Crescent Consortium of Peace Builders and Affiliates for dissemination in Zamboanga City.

The moon-sighting ritual is mandated in Islam on all Muslims to determine the first day of Shawwal, the month after the Holy Month of Ramadan, and celebrated worldwide as the feast of Eidil-Fitri, Ustadz Amil said.

Earlier, proclamation No. 514 declaring June 15, 2018 as a regular holiday throughout the Philippines pursuant to R.A. 9177 was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte.

On the part of the Muslim faithful, they await the result of the moon-sighting to be conducted by a committee of the Ulama from the DarulIfta.

At the start of Ramadan fasting, the same procedure is observed by all Muslims to determine the end of fasting. Thus, if the crescent moon will be sighted at sunset on June 14, this year, then the Eid prayers and other religious services will take place on June 15.But if due to natural causes, the moon could not be sighted, automatically, the Eid prayers in all Mosques throughout the country will take place on June 16, 2018/1 Shawwal 1439 A.H., Prof. Yacub, explained.

“The proclamation issued by the President of the Philippines earlier, will not be affected by the result of the moon-sighting because this is a religious duty imposed upon all Muslims world-wide,” Prof. Yacub said.

Prof. Yacub invites everyone to send greetings of Eid Mubarak on the day of Eidil-Fitri/HarirayaPuasa in order to have a joyful celebration. (GCCPBA Media Section/PR)
