Mayor Beng Climaco expressed jubilation as she congratulated the Zamboanga team Valientes in its first win in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Anta Datu Cup in Biñan, Laguna recently.

Valientes, a newcomer in the MPBL, secured its first win against the Laguna host team dubbed the Heroes with a score of 86-80 during the June 14 game at the Alonte Sports Complex. The Zamboanga team’s victory is considered by sports analysts as a “good first impression” making it a stand out from the rest despite it being a rookie in league.

Mayor Climaco said the Zamboanga team, owned by Yacob Ati and supported by Family’s Brand Sardines and other renowned Zamboangueno sports buffs, has the backing of the local government which advocates sports and youth development.

She said Zamboanguenos will continue to await and cheer for the Valientes, being the first Zamboanga team to be fielded in the MPBL.

Valientes is a powerhouse team that is composed of ex-professional talents to include Jonathan Parenno, team captain, who last played for Kia Picanto (now Columbian Dyip) in the 2014-2015 season. Other members of the team are former San Miguel player Leo Avenido, Australian-based guard Eric Miraflores, Chico Lanete’s brother Von Lanete and ex-Barako Bull Reed Juntilla.

The team was officially launched last June 8 in Taguig City in Manila. (Sheila Covarrubias/PR)
