The current peace and order situation in Zamboanga City remains relatively peaceful and manageable despite a slight increase in murder incidents.

The Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) reported during the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) meeting yesterday that a total crime volume of 2,799 incidents were recorded from January to June 2018, marking a significant decrease of 2,799 or 38.72% compared to the 4,568 incidents for the same period last year.

The ZCPO crime data showed that theft was the most prevalent among the index crimes with 484 incidents followed by physical injury with 113 and 116 robbery cases.

The CPOC, headed by Mayor Beng Climaco, met for its quarterly meeting yesterday at City Hall.

Meanwhile, the police reported that for the non-index crime, reckless imprudence resulting in criminal cases such as homicide, physical injury and damages to properties recorded 139 incidents of 49% of the total non-index crimes.

All other crime incidents had significantly decreased, except for the campaign against illegal drugs under RA 9165 with 417 or 24% increase, and murder with 4 incidents increase.

The increase in the campaign against illegal drugs indicates that the police were more effective this year than last year.

The police also reported that threats to the city’s safety and security were still high, especially coming from the Abu Sayyaf Group, Islamic State and other lawless elements capable of carrying out kidnapping, bombing and other nefarious activities for purposes of expanding their territory and fund raising.-(Vic Larato/City Hall PR)
