A newly elected barangay kagawad and former president of the Rotary Club West was shot dead yesterday morning by an unidentified assailant just outside of his residence in Barangay Sta. Catalina, this city.

Police investigation disclosed Kagawad Michael Magallanes, newly-elected kagawad of the Barangay Council of Sta. Catalina was about to leave his residence aboard his motorcycle to go a feeding program he initiated in one of the depressed area of the barangay shortly before 7 a.m. when a gunman approached him from behind and without a word shot him five times.

Investigators said the assailant was wearing a hooded mask and was armed with a .45 caliber pistol.

Magallanes sustained five fatal wounds in the head and in the different parts of the body and was rushed by a concerned tricycle driver to the Zamboanga Doctor’s Hospital but died minutes later while undergoing treatment.

Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) processed the crime scene and were able to recover 5 spent shells of Caliber .45 Pistol and 2 slugs.

District II Councilor Jimmy Villaflores, former Sta. Catalina barangay chairman, disclosed that Magallanes prior to being elected as kagawad was also the former treasurer of Sta. Catalina Barangay Council. The victim has just won as a first-termer kagawad last May 14 Barangay and SK elections.

According to Villaflores, just last year, Magallanes was also shot by a still an unidentified suspect but he was only hit in the leg.

Villaflores told Zamboanga Today that despite the first attempt on Magallanes life the victim opted not to reveal to the police who might be the possible suspect in the first incident.

Investigators said that after the daring shooting incident, the gunman casually walked towards the interior portion of Sta. Catalina.

The police are conducting a thorough probe on the case although it seems that they are still facing a blank wall as to the motive of the shooting as well as the identity of the suspect.

Magallenes’ death is just one of the many unsolved shootings here in the city for the past several months. (Eugene A. Lasprilla with report from SS)
