The Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Office 9 held a tourism crisis management symposium in this city yesterday to make sure that the tourism industry is prepared for any eventualities.

Myra Paz V. Abubakar, DOT 9 regional director said, this is important since crisis management is integral to the successful implementation of tourism programs and sustainable management of destinations as crisis can happen anytime.

The Tourism Act of 2009 provides for DOT to develop a relevant crisis management framework that can be implemented by the tourism industry stakeholders.

Several tourism stakeholders from Region 9 were present during the said activity.

The topics discussed during the symposium included building resiliency of the Philippine tourism industry, stability in adversity, understanding crisis management and the tourism industry, situational awareness, emergency management in the tourism industry, briefing on how to draft an emergency management plan, workshop, and presentation of draft tourism crisis management plan.

"Kapag gumawa kayo ng emergency management plan, kailangan doon sa certain area, site specific yung pag gawa ng plan," Eugene Boco, safety and security consultant said.

He added that the securty plan of the local government and that of the private sector must not contradict each other. (R.G. A A. Go)
