The Department of Education (DepEd) yesterday expressed concern over the poor performance of elementary and secondary students from Region 9 who took the National Achievement Test (NAT) for the year 2018.

Assistant City School Division Superintendent Joy Fernandez disclosed that out of 17 regions in the entire country that took the examination, Region 9 landed at 16th place.

“Out of the 17 regions all over the country, high school students from Region 9 ranked number 16 or 35.09 percent, while pupils in the elementary also are in the 16th place ranking, or a total of 39.88 percent,” Fernandez said.

The assistant superintendent also disclosed that Region 9 has eight school divisions and students from Zamboanga City rank fifth.

Fernandez attributed the embarrassing result to the postponement of the NAT for three consecutive years.

The other reason she said, could be due to the cellphones that students are allowed to carry anywhere that contain internet games and social media.

“But this has to be studied and researched if this is one of the reasons,” Fernandez emphasized.

Fernandez added that there are also suggestions to retrain the teachers to further improve their teaching capabilities. (SS)
