Zambo keeps heightened level of alert amid threats

Mayor Beng Climaco convened on Wednesday the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) where she declared that Zamboanga City always maintains a heightened level of alert to thwart any untoward incidents, especially now that the entire city is in the thick of Hermosa festivities.

“We do not want to end up being surprised. Instead, we want to surprise our enemies to thwart and prevent any untoward incident. That is why we have worked with security forces and all intelligence units,” Climaco said.

The mayor was responding to a query from a CPOC member about information on alleged presence here of suspected lawless elements from the island provinces.

For his part, Col. Leonel Nicolas, commander of Joint Task Force Zamboanga, said ever since the city celebrates an event such as the Hermosa festival there are always what he called “perceived threats” from lawless elements, either based here or from neighboring provinces.

“But we do our homework also,” Col. Nicolas told the CPOC members, adding that a comprehensive security plan dubbed “Task Group Hermosa” has been crafted by the police, military, coast guard and all other forces to address the threats, both interisland and domestic.

He stressed that all intelligence units are exerting every effort to make sure that any and all information related to threats are validated and “so far, right now as we speak, there is no indicator of their presence (bombers). Nakatutok tayo dyan,” Nicolas reassured.

According to him, the ongoing military operations in Basilan and Sulu had prevented the lawless elements from moving out of their lairs on those island provinces.-(Vic Larato)
