Zambo, Puerto Princesa forge sisterhood pact

Mayor Beng Climaco was expected to sign a sisterhood agreement with her counterpart from Puerto Princesa, Palawan as a fitting highlight on the eve of the feast of Nuestra Senora de la Virgen del Pilar, Thursday, Oct. 11.

Puerto Princesa City Mayor Lucilo Bayron, represented by Counciloro Maria Nancy Socrates, was expected to lead the group during the formal signing ceremony set at 6pm at the City Hall lobby. Other members of the Puerto Princesa delegation were Councilors Rolando Amurao, Henry Gadiano and Mathew Mendoza.

Mayor Climaco, meanwhile, was joined by Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde and the members of the City Council.

The forging of the sister city partnership between Zamboanga City and Puerto Princesa is an offshoot of Resolution 148 approved by the Puerto Princesa City Council last Sept. 20, 2016 authorizing Mayor Bayron to enter into a twinning agreement with the city “to encourage greater friendship, goodwill and understanding between the two cities through direct interaction and communication.”

The Zamboanga City Council acknowledged and accepted Puerto Princesa’s initiative and offer of sisterhood relationship through Resolution 1019 dated Oct. 18, 2016 authorizing Mayor Climaco to enter into this Act.

Under the agreement, both cities agree to “collaborate for the mutual benefit of their communities by exploring educational, economic and cultural opportunities and by sharing technology in the fields of commerce and industry.”

At the same time, both parties agree to support and encourage opportunities for mutually beneficial and practical exchanges in the fields of business, arts and culture, health, science , education, sports, tourism and local governance.

Also, both the Cities of Zamboanga and Puerto Princesa agree to “exchange constructive ideas and best practices in local governance to increase knowledge and understanding in effectively managing various facets of city governance” as well as “to encourage and foster goodwill and friendship, inter-city visits of city officials and executives, associations and residents of the city of Puerto Princesa and the City of Zamboanga.” (Sheila Covarrubias)
