Congressman Celso L. Lobregat called on the Zamboangueños to be one in prayer and continue veneration to the Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar on her feast day, today.

The entire city of Zamboanga is celebrating Fiesta Pilar today, with a grand procession and Pontifical mass in the afternoon which is expected to be attended by people from all walks of life.

“I am wishing all Zamboangueños Happy Fiesta Pilar. May our patron saint continue to protect and guide the destiny of our city, and this is because of our strong faith and devotion to her, this is the time to honor her today in return for her goodness,” Lobregat said.

The solon is also requesting the people of Zamboanga to stay vigilant and cooperate with the authorities in safeguarding the city, particularly in places of worship during the culminating religious activities today.

Every October 12 of each year, Zamboanga City honors its patron saint at the Fort Pilar shrine, which is known as the Real Fuerza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza in Spanish. The shrine is a 17th century military defense fortress built by the Spanish colonial government. Its establishment in 1635 is said to be the founding day of the Chavacano language.

Republic Act 7350 declares every October 12 as a non-working holiday in Zamboanga City to allow the Zamboangueños to fittingly celebrate the feast day of the Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar (Our Lady of the Pillar).

The said Republic Act was authored by the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat during her stint as this city’s lone representative in Congress. (Dexter Yap/PR)
